Models Fornonlinear Long Internal Waves in a Rotating Ocean

Grimshaw R.

In the presence of the Earth’s background rotation, the usual Korteweg-de Vries equation for the description of long nonlinear internal waves is replaced by the Ostrovsky equation. In this paper we revisit the asymptotic derivation of this equation, incorporating a background shear flow as well as the background stratification. Then we extend this model to allow for a horizontally varying background state, and describe how an initial Korteweg-de Vries solitary wave is deformed and extinguished by the emission of radiating inertia-gravity waves.
