The Distribution of Bathymetric Slopes in the Ocean in Relation to Critical Reflection of Internal Waves

Gerkema T.

The distribution of bathymetric slopes is considered in its three-dimensional setting, calculating steepness and horizontal orientation of its tangential planes. We consider a part of the Atlantic Ocean that includes the inertial latitudes of diurnal tides. The expression for critical reflection of internal waves is recapitulated, with non-traditional Coriolis effects included. It is shown that the likelihood of critical reflection enhances significantly if one calculates the bottom steepness in a three-dimensional approach, as opposed to taking just sections along a line.
